My personal fitness journey began in 2005 when already, at the age of 22, I realized I was way too young to be feeling as sick and tired as I did all the time. Bad habits were quickly becoming dangerously addictive, and I was relying on them to self-medicate due to how poorly I was sleeping and how crappy I felt about myself.
I had been active for most of my school years in Upstate NY, starting with Tae Kwon Do in elementary school, discovering track & field in middle school, then taking up cross country in high school. Then, I had the opportunity to go abroad during my junior year. Before long, I became all-too accustomed to late nights, rich foods, and a very low legal drinking age. Unfortunately, when I left to come home, I did not leave the bad habits behind. About 6 years later, I reconnected with a former high school sweetheart and moved to South Carolina. He too had some bad habits to shed from his college years, so together we adopted a healthier lifestyle. Together, we got a gym membership, and I decided to start running again. But I knew if I was going to do it, I was going to go for broke. Never mind 5K or 10K's, I signed up for a marathon. My first marathon was not pretty. I discovered how challenging it was to balance classes, a serving job, AND marathon training. So for my next marathon attempt I knew I wanted to learn more about how the body adapts to exercise so that I could apply that knowledge to my own training. So I transferred from General Sciences to a Personal Trainer Program - a decision that would not only benefit my own running, but something that would turn into a career path I would want to dedicate myself to. As I learned and grew as a personal trainer, my running because stronger. I continue to test my limits as I encourage my clients to do the same, with an emphasis that fitness is something far greater than a means by which to lose weight. It's about fully embracing a fit, healthy and happy lifestyle through a balanced approach to exercise and nutrition. It took me some time to figure out how to apply that philosophy to my life, so I want save others from waiting too long to finally feel good.
